It was one fine evening in January 2016 that I decided to fly back to Maldives from Colombo after few date changes on my itinerary. We were boarded around 1945hrs. After all the pre flight announcements by the crews, the plane took off and flew higher and higher. Most passengers did not listen to the pre-flight safety announcement. Nor could most passengers tell you what exactly they are supposed to do in an emergency.
Even though I have seen the safety briefings 100s of times I kind of watch them still as I believe it shows some respect to the crew and despite the frequent travelling, I still love to be reminded for my own safety reasons. It’s sad to see most of the passengers carry on having their loud conversations during the safety briefing. I know it’s boring for those frequent travelers. But whether you believe it or not, there are some passengers who want to pay attention as they seldom or even never fly on the same flight.
As we flew higher and higher I looked through the plane and saw a passenger standing two rows ahead of me wearing a jacket with “Aeroplane of idiots” printed in the back which reflected all throughout the flight.
Halfway to our journey there was an announcement “Ladies and gentleman, the captain has turned on the fasten seat belt sign. We are now crossing a zone of turbulence. Please return your seats and keep your seat belts fastened. Thank you.” Which also ended as a useless announcement by the crews as some of the passengers were busy chanting and celebrating. Some of them were even moving around with their kids.
Another incident I want to highlight is, despite repeated announcements to keep the mobile phones switched off, one of the passenger seems to be excluded as he was nicely talking to his friend in Maldives when the plane approaches the runway and, he was giving live commentary to his friend as we landed the beautiful Maldives.
Its common sense to keep the mobile phones switched off to minimize the distraction. Point to note is, no matter how remote, that something someone uses somewhere could cause something sad which leads everybody to suffer and that’s why the crew advised keeping it switched off.
Therefore please follow the instructions; it’s for the safety of you and others.
